In October, 1897, I had an inflamed eye and went to a physician who gave me atropin to inject. In a short time I could not see with that eye, and I then went to a clinic in Berlin where I was told to take a certain remedy thirty times. My eye improved, and after the treatments I went back to my position. This was about the end of March, 1898, and I was to be married in April, 1899. I was so weak and I also had rheumatism, difficulty in breathing, palpitation of the heart, and swollen hands and feet. I, however, dragged myself along until February, 1899, when I broke down. The physician pronounced it dilatation of the heart; he said that I had water on the heart and must undergo an operation.
My father would not permit this. He said if I must die he would not see me suffer thus. Then I was put in ice-bandages from February until Whitsuntide. After that I went to homoeopathy, which had a better effect upon me. I recovered, but very slowly, and was now blind in one eye. As soon as my condition permitted I went to a clinic in Greifswald where my case was pronounced tuberculosis. My eye was to be removed—but to this I did not submit.
In November, 1901, I heard of Christian Science. What I heard of it seemed at first incredible; however, my husband (at that time my fiancé) begged me to go to Berlin to be treated, which I did. Through the great love of our God and the kindness and patient endeavor of my practitioner, I am now so healthy that I am well able to attend to my household duties and I am on my feet all day. We were married in November, 1902, and I have been well and happy right along, for which I praise God, and I know His mercy and love will keep me well. From the time I first took treatments, I have used no medicine, while formerly I could not be without it. I am calm and composed and not afraid. I praise God for my health when I awake in the morning and when I lie down in the evening.
