I first heard of Christian Science in 1885 while visiting...

From the September 1904 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I first heard of Christian Science in 1885 while visiting in the vicinity of Boston. I was a sickly child from birth and had sickness constantly held before my eyes; it seemed to grow with my growth until, when I reached womanhood, the days of suffering increased and life became a burden. I had been a student of the Bible many years and had marked many passages on the subject of healing from Genesis to Revelation. I felt convinced that the Scriptures contained it, and at times I could grasp it by faith and get about for a short time, only to relapse into a worse condition, and so it continued until I lost all faith in material remedies. Physicians had said they could not cure me, that I would probably die by inches, not immediately (which I preferred), and the words of Jeremiah seemed true, "In vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured."

When everything failed me and there seemed to be no hope but to drag out a miserable existence until the end came, I finally said, I will take up the study of what is called Christian Science. I procured the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, and began to read it carefully and prayerfully. I soon saw that I had found the pearl of great price, the Science of Christianity. The letter and the Spirit both bearing witness, I was lifted above my false beliefs and I saw clearly my true being as a child of God, —infinite Love. Truly I had found a great light; it could and would heal from sin, disease, and death, and I must prove it for myself. Demonstration after demonstration, that were to me most marvelous, followed, until I knew that I had the truth which could not be taken from me, for I had the proof.

Words are inadequate to express the gratitude and love I desire to convey through these columns to our dear Leader for Science and Health, and for the blessings that have come to me and mine as well as to those near and dear to me who would not be on earth to-day had it not been for the teaching of this "little book." "Mortal, obey the heavenly evangel. Take up divine Science. Read it from beginning to end. Study it, ponder it" (Science and Health, p. 55). I found that it does heal morally and physically. For all the Christian Science literature I feel deeply grateful.
