I have read the Journal and Sentinel for nearly three years, and have derived much benefit in so doing, especially from the testimonies. Christian Science was first brought to my notice in 1897, and I immediately began to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and the periodicals. Before this I had studied some books and papers which I supposed set forth Christian Science; but when the text-book by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, was loaned me, I was told that this book, together with her other writings and the literature of The Christian Science Publishing Society, contained the only correct statements of this Science. This aroused considerable antagonism on my part, for I prided myself on being broad-minded, and the idea of limiting my reading to the books of one publishing house, seemed narrow and unjust.
With these erroneous views I read the book and received no benefit, as my prejudice had closed the door of my understanding. I returned Science and Health and turned my thought to other things, and I saw no more Science literature until the fall of 1900, when I became acquainted with some Scientists, one of whom afterwards gave me class instruction. My new friends finally induced me to resume my study of Science and Health, which I did.
Not long after this the scales began to fall from my eyes, and the beauty, grandeur, and nobility of the lifework of our beloved Leader began to unfold itself to my consciousness. I was not studying that I might receive any physical benefit, but simply to know the truth for which I long had sought, and now divine Love dissolved my prejudice sufficiently to let in the light.
