PENIEL

From the November 1908 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When, sore beset by doubts and fears, thou farest forth
alone.
Bereft by thine own hand of all that thou hast called thine
own,
When by the river thou dost pause, ere thou its flood essay,
God's angel there with thee shall strive until the break of
day.

But fear thou not when by his touch he doth thy strength
dispel,
Clasp him the closer to thy breast, and all shall yet be well;
Refuse thou e'er to let him go, till thou his blessing know,
And thou shalt feel the strength of God through all thy
being flow.
The breaking day shall bring to thee God's light, effulgent.
pure,
And henceforth in that light shalt thou stand resolute and
sure;
Upon thy brow, divinely writ, thy new name shall appear.
And thou shalt meet each threat'ning ill with heart devoid
of fear.

God's angel hath bestowed on thee the chrism of Love
divine,
And evermore upon thee God shall cause His face to shine.
Till vanquished, yea, and vanished, each foe that thee
assailed:
A prince of God, thou standest free, for lo! thou hast
prevailed!
