Several years ago, in Jacksonville, Fla., I was thrown...

From the February 1908 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Several years ago, in Jacksonville, Fla., I was thrown from a bicycle while riding at a great speed, landing on my back, but my recovery from the immediate injury was speedy and apparently perfect. Some months after, when all the premonitory symptoms of paralytic trouble developed, I was very despondent, as I knew there was no relief for me in medicine, the disease being called incurable. My wife, who is a Christian Scientist, urged me to try Christian Science treatment, but my reply was that it could not do anything for me, that I was doomed to a life of pain, uselessness, and an early death. After constant urging I very reluctantly consented for her to request a practitioner to treat me. Treatment was given for some days, and the condition was very much relieved. Suddenly all the symptoms returned and the practitioner gave up the case; saying she could not treat me without my full consent, as she could not feel that full justice was being done me under the circumstances. For weeks the symptoms gradually grew worse, till I was in despair. All this time my wife was persistently urging me to be treated. Finally I consented to go and talk with the practitioner, and she, wise in God's love, led me to consent to treatment. Relief was rapid and constant; in a few weeks every symptom was gone and I was perfectly cured.

In a short time I was engaged in the erection of a nineteen-story steel building, for months climbing from bottom to top several times a day. For more than four years I have been free from this dreaded disease. About a year ago I had a severe attack of kidney trouble, which was promptly relieved by Christian Science treatment. I now weigh over two hundred pounds and am in perfect health. Words fail to express my gratitude to the godly woman who was able to do so much for me through Christian Science.—
