I had been troubled with my kidneys off and on for a number of years. Early in 1900 I grew worse, and after taking medicine from doctors I was obliged to give up work on the railroad where I was employed. I sent for a specialist from out of town. He examined me and said I had serious kidney trouble. My suffering became so intense that for weeks I could not lie down. After four weeks of the treatment which he prescribed I lost nearly forty pounds in weight and was no better. At this time another physician was called. The latter was one of the most experienced and best-known doctors in this city. He seemed to be baffled as to the cause of my trouble, but after a careful diagnosis he pronounced it a dreaded kidney disease. I continued his treatment for three weeks, and grew so much worse that I felt the end was near. My friends who called in told one another that I had little longer to live.
My wife had urged me to try Christian Science, but I had steadily refused. Now I was willing to try anything. On May 2, 1900, I presented my case to a Christian Scientist for treatment. The practitioner gave me the first treatment about ten o'clock at night and told me to go to bed . and sleep. I protested that it would be foolish for me to lie down, that I had not been in bed for weeks, but after further assurance I retired to my room and did not awaken until seven o'clock the next morning. Such sound and restful sleep as it was! I awakened with a great sense of freedom, and realized that something extraordinary had happened. For the first time in months I ate a hearty breakfast and then took a two-hour walk about town. From that time I have not suffered in any degree from the trouble that brought me so near the grave. I was still weak and emaciated, but gained so rapidly that in three weeks I returned to my work, after an absence of ten weeks. For more than seven years I have not lost a single day on account of sickness, and I am required to be on duty from half-past six in the morning until six o'clock at night during seven days of the week. Before coming into Christian Science I felt that I could not get along without the constant use of medicine. Since the healing above recorded I have not taken a dose of material medicine, but have found Christian Science sufficient to remove quickly and thoroughly all symptoms of disease and suffering. During the two months that I was under doctors' care I paid out four times as much for medical treatment as I paid for the healing and all subsequent treatment in Christian Science.
