My attention was drawn to Christian Science through the wonderful healing of dear relatives. An aunt was healed by it of a spinal disease of eight years' standing, although a specialist had told her that it was a very severe case and beyond cure. During the day she wore a plaster corset, and at night she used a special cast, but without getting the relief she yearned for. After three months' treatment in Christian Science she returned home healed, and was able to manage her household affairs. Five years have elapsed since, and she is a strong and well woman who is very grateful for Christian Science. Another aunt was healed of severe rheumatism of the joints, and she too is very grateful for the blessing that has come to her.
Having not only seen these cases but also heard of many other instances of healing of all manner of disease through Christian Science, my faith in medical skill was shaken. At that time a trouble in my leg, with which I had suffered for nine years, manifested itself in a more severe form than ever before. Various physicians whom I consulted during these years told me that it was a case of poisoning and that I must be very careful. During these years I could walk very rarely and only for a short time without bandages. I then decided to put my case into the hands of a Christian Science practitioner, and treatment was kindly taken up. The hard and painful spots had never opened on the outside up to that time, but now they did, and several large sores which formed on each leg discharged profusely.
I went through some hard struggles, as my understanding of Christian Science was not sufficient for me to realize that the purifying and regenerating law of Spirit was at work. Thus doubt and discouragement kept coming, but the treatment sustained me and renewed my hope, and grounded me in the truth which is always the victor. With the growing desire to practise more of Christian Science in my daily life, instead of only trying to be healed in a physical way, the latter healing also made progress, and the truth did make me free. All pain disappeared, and the sores were all healed. Several other ailments have disappeared along with the one mentioned, among them two from which I had suffered since childhood. I then took up the study of the English language, and began to read the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I had always disliked foreign languages, but through the understanding that God is the only intelligence and that there are no limitations in God's creation, I have overcome these limitations, and I can say that the study has been easy and has given me much joy.
