THE UNREALITY OF EVIL

From the October 1911 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN Christian Science we learn to think of God as Spirit, Mind; and that His kingdom is spiritual, infinite, and can be made visible through Mind alone. Human language is of no use in revealing God's kingdom only so far as it expresses the spiritual nature of all things. All that is best in human nature, each excellent quality, comes to us from the one infinite Mind, Spirit, which we term God. From the nature of its divine source, a right thought expressed must be effective in destroying erroneous notions; but the most telling testimony of the ever-presence of infinite Love is that of the daily life which demonstrates the power of divine Mind to overcome the illusions of mortals in reference to sickness, sin, and death.

That life which is a reflection of divine Truth has a power which compels attention, for it rises superior to the mortal concept of things. It is conscious of dominion over the physical senses; conscious of love instead of hate, of health instead of sickness; it is at one with the infinite Spirit and knows no separation from God. An abiding sense of the presence of God gives victory over the cares and vexations, over the trials and temptations which assail mortals on every side, and the daily life manifests a serene confidence in the omnipotence of divine Love. Human actions then become consistent, stable, and effective for good. A life which is so obviously directed by good instead of evil attracts attention, makes men think; and, sooner or later, it is realized that "the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we behold his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, ) full of grace and truth."

We know that we have not seen God with the mortal eye at any time; but when a life is manifest among us which is obviously controlled by God, then we know that "the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him [God], " and we see that a living testimony has been given of the one infinite good, of the Mind which is God, and which is all around us. "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth." These are the words of Christ Jesus, the great teacher and practical demonstrator of the fact that divine Love is always present and is able to save us from the effects of belief in sickness, sin, and death, and to reveal the glorious reality that God is omnipotent good, and evil a false consciousness, an unreality, a lie.
