After the healing of a member of my family in Christian Science, I began the study about nine years ago. Before the year was over I had a very severe attack of rheumatism. I had been ill with the disease when a child, and had another attack when grown, these spells lasting several months, even under the best medical skill. This last illness was attended with exactly the same violent symptoms, and I suffered terribly for three days and nights. The third day a Christian Science practitioner came to me, and I remember looking at the clock and wondering how I could keep quiet during the treatment; but I had not long to wait, for in twenty-five minutes I was healed! A trained nurse, a friend of the family, came to see me just after the practitioner left. She begged me not to trifle any longer, stating that she knew the nature of the disease, and that I might be ill a long time. I then pounded with my fist on my swollen and inflamed knees and ankles, showing her that all pain had been destroyed. She turned from my bed without a word. For three nights I had been awake with the intense pain, but this night I could not sleep for joy—joy that I had been healed by God! I was out in three days. Another instance of the power of Truth was the healing of a very large carbuncle which had formed on the back of my neck, and was healed without my experiencing any pain. I might enumerate a number of personal experiences in the way of healing, and also the healing of others that has come under my observation, and these have been a great inspiration.
I feel deeply grateful for these proofs of the power of Truth, but I am far more grateful for a knowledge of divine Principle, of Love, which gives us the assurance that all evil can be overcome, and which helps us to overcome by leading us to a holier life.
