From the October 1912 issue of The Christian Science Journal

[Translated from the German]

On Friday, Dec. 15, 1911, I was suddenly seized with a pain which so increased in severity that my husband sent for a physician, who stated that it was a serious affection of the kidneys. In the evening my condition was aggravated and the pain seemed unbearable. The physician prescribed tablets to induce sleep, but when the effect of the opiate ceased the pain would return with greater intensity than before. The physician, after an examination, sentenced me to a three-months stay in bed with a rigid diet. Naturally I became very much discouraged, especially as Christmas was close at hand and both of my little girls were left to take care of themselves. Even my husband, who always showed much fortitude, became very despondent.

On the evening that I heard the overwhelming verdict from the physician, my thought turned to Christian Science. Six weeks previous to this my eldest child had been healed in Christian Science, but my husband was not yet convinced as to the truth of this teaching. However, as my brother-in-law's health has been restored in a wonderful way through its means, so that he does not now shrink from any kind of work, my husband said that there must be here a great power, the existence of which we unfortunately fail to acknowledge, but which has ever been available to us. So he went to a practitioner himself and applied for treatment for me.
