Testimonies of Healing

I deem it a great privilege to...

From the February 1914 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I deem it a great privilege to testify through the Journal to the blessings I have received in Christian Science. Four years ago my wife, who had not known a well day in twenty years, was taken seriously ill, and it seemed as though some extra effort would have to be made to avoid a fatal ending. A few months previous to this time she had purchased from a neighbor a second-hand copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and had read it some, so that when this attack came, she understood enough to turn to Truth for healing. For two days she kept on reading, but seemed to get worse instead of better. I finally decided to interfere in the matter, and told her she must either get a doctor or a Christian Science practitioner, I did not care which, so that some efforts were made for her recovery.

The next day, sick as my wife was, she got down to a practitioner's office and received treatment. After about two days, the carnal mind took possession of me and I began to ridicule Christian Science. I told my wife that if she did get well, Science would have nothing to do with it, and I added much to her misery and suffering by my antagonistic attitude. I remember leaving the house one morning and telling her I was going down to the practitioner's office to put a stop to the whole business; but I did nothing of the kind. Instead, I went down to my office, and for the next ten days did less work and more hard thinking than I had ever done before.

The end of all this came when I got up Sunday morning, Feb. 2, 1908. I felt different in some way, and I told my wife I had had a tussle with old Satan, that I had given him a good drubbing, and that he would not bother me any more. I did not at the time really understand what I was talking about, but it was shortly made clear to me. My wife had not improved very much with the treatments, but had been able to keep out of bed. She was still a very sick looking woman, yet she had the courage to go to church.
