I have had so many proofs of God's love and protection, of His ever-present help, that I should like to tell of some of them, in the hope that it may be a help to others who are suffering. When I was advised to try Christian Science, two years ago, I had no idea that it was a religion. I had suffered over twenty years from stomach trouble and from bloodlessness. I had an operation for the removal of diseased organs over sixteen years ago. This gave relief at the time, but it was followed by very depressing conditions. I tried all kinds of medicines and dieting, but they were of no avail, and the doctors told me the stomach trouble was chronic, that I would just have to find out what food suited me best, and latterly I was reduced to partial starvation. In 1908 my condition became very much worse, and a specialist, whom I consulted for lung and heart trouble, advised me to go to a sanitarium. I was there three months, but returned home no better;indeed, I was worse. My nervous system was shattered, and all winter I suffered from mental confusion and depression.
In the early summer I went to the country, and in July, when I started to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I was in despair, and wished every day would be my last on earth. Reading had become too much of an exertion, but I was ready to grasp at anything which promised health, and the reading of the text-book seemed an easy thing to do to get health. I read on day after day, with little understanding, but I liked the first chapter, on Prayer, and gradually a chord seemed to have been struck which responded to Truth, and unconsciously I was being healed. I had found my heavenly Father, whom I could love. I had all my life felt in a hazy way that God protected me, and I had a secret desire to be good, but I did not know how. Science and Health showed me how this desire could be fulfilled, namely, by honest and earnest application of the truth.
I took up this study in July, 1910, and by September I was quite healed. I began to attend the Christian Science services, and these services have been, and are, a great joy and spiritual uplift. The first one was a revelation of peace. I had suffered nearly every winter from influenza, and for weeks was left in a very weak condition. Since studying Christian Science, I have had three attacks, but each has been met and overcome in about a day, with the slight understanding I had of God as omnipresent Love. To me this has been a wonderful experience, and I have also been able to overcome much irritability of temper and many other discords.
