This testimony is given in gratitude for the many benefits received through Christian Science. About four years ago, having applied for an insurance policy, I was examined by two doctors, whose report was of such a character that my application was refused. The doctors said that my kidneys were in a serious condition, and they advised me to put myself in the hands of a specialist. After three months I again submitted myself for examination, and they said that I was in an even worse condition and that I had not long to live. Another doctor to whom I was referred, refused to treat my case;he said he could be of no help to me. I finally saw another doctor, and with much pressure he consented to take me in hand, though he had not much hope. He said it was the worst case of kidney disease he had ever seen.
After being under this doctor for quite a time, I heard of Christian Science, and while in the doctor's hands I began to study the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." At the end of three months the doctor pronounced me incurable, and said that I could be kept alive only by the strictest medical attention, and that he would like to consult another specialist. Then and there I decided that I would place all my reliance upon Christian Science. The doctor, who was very kind, had said that if I cared I might call in to see him, so after a while I did so, and he was very much surprised to find me much improved. He said he did not know what I was doing and did not press to know, but that I was receiving more benefit than he could give me and advised me to continue. He also wished me to call again, as he was much interested in my case. After a period I did call, and he was still more surprised. He said I was practically healed, that I ought to go away a happy and very grateful man, and that I must forget I ever had such a disease. While under the doctors' care I was physically in a very weak state, but I had one treatment in Christian Science for this weakness, and on that day my strength returned, and it has been normal ever since.
Up to three years ago I was a very heavy drinker, and had been for sixteen years. The doctors had always said that my intemperate habits were aggravating the disease, and they sternly forbade my indulgence. I desired to be free, and struggled long and painfully, but always in vain. I invariably gave in to the terrible craving I had for drink, and this failure added to my mental and physical wretchedness.
