While reading a copy of The...

From the August 1914 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While reading a copy of The Christian Science Journal I found these words by Mrs. Eddy: "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech" (Science and Health, p. 3). The thought came to me that I should express my gratitude for Christian Science by telling, for the benefit of others, some of the blessings I have received.

I had been a student of the Scriptures for over twenty years and had been a church-member for the same period. For the last six years, however, I was quite dissatisfied with the authorized teachings of the church to which I belonged, but was very prejudiced against what I supposed to be the teachings of Christian Science. Nevertheless, when a friend told me of her healing through Christian Science and asked me to read a pamphlet, I said to myself that I would lay aside the prejudice long enough at least to investigate, although I felt certain I would get nothing out of it.

To my astonishment, and I must say to my extreme delight, I found that this religion did not conflict with the Bible at all, as I had always supposed it did. Instead, it opened up to my consciousness many texts which before had seemed hard to understand or harmonize with what I had believed to be realities. As I have continued to study, the path has grown brighter; and to show my thankfulness to God, and my gratitude to the Discoverer of this new-old religion, I send this testimony, hoping that some who read may be persuaded to search for themselves instead of relying upon another's opinion.
