For many years I suffered untold agony from a supposedly incurable organic disease which kept me in bed a considerable part of the time. I also had a growth in the breast that returned within a year after it had been removed by a surgical operation. A severe attack of poisoning left me with a hand practically useless for four years. It was said that there was no cure for this condition.
Being a physician's daughter I grew up in an atmosphere of drugs, and was treated with them from my childhood, as I was seldom free from some ailment. I have had the services of thirty physicians in all. A number of these were specialists and some of them friends. I appreciate their sincere although unsuccessful efforts to free me from the physical ills, which faded into nothingness in comparison with the sufferings attendant upon my awakening to the fact that I was in still greater bondage to the use of soporific drugs, which they had been administering at intervals for years. Sleep without a sedative was to me out of the question. The belief that a tendency to this latter condition was also inherited, filled me with despair and resentment toward God, and there were occasions when I felt that I must lose my reason. The depths of my physical and mental anguish at the time Christian Science found me could not be described.
Although my healing in Christian Science was slow, I have been set entirely free from all these ills through the correct understanding and application of its teachings. I have learned that all those experiences were but dreams of the absence of God; that I needed to awaken to the realization of His ever-presence and supremacy, His allness. I have also had many proofs that the "word of God is quick, and powerful," having been healed of a severe attack of lumbago in less than twenty-four hours, and of a most painful abscess on the thumb in one day. A badly injured hand was healed in less than three weeks, and no splints, bandages, or material appliances of any kind were used. This work was done without the aid of a practitioner, by the declaration of truth alone. During that time I did not lose one hour from my duties, which were most strenuous for about ten hours a day.
