Four years ago two active, loyal students of Christian Science took its gospel of health to a home where it was unknown. For several years the members of this home had been in great mental and physical distress, for which every material means had been tried, but conditions only grew worse. During these years Christian Science was many times recommended, and upon several occasions discussed; but instead of an awakened interest, these discussions aroused feelings of antagonism, so that the visit of these ladies had not been solicited by the members of the family but by a mutual friend. She was not then, nor is she now, a Christian Scientist, but she had been a frequent visitor at this home and had seen how material means failed to bring relief. Seeing also that a time had arrived when help must come from some source, and having heard somewhat of the results of Christian Science, she began to speak of our trying it; but her remarks were ignored until she asked directly if some Christian Science ladies might call. Permission was given, for of course they could harm no one by calling, and in this state of hopeless indifference they found this home. After a few moments of conversation I discerned that they possessed something which I desired—an understanding of God as divine Love!
Up to this time I had been taught that evil, disease, and death were sent by our loving heavenly Father to make us better and love Him more, but instead this concept of God was filling my life with hatred and rebellion; so it is no wonder that I grasped at the concept of God they presented. This was the beginning of my journey into the promised land, "into the land of Christian Science, where fetters fall and the rights of man are fully known and acknowledged" (Science and Health, p. 226).
Since then God has been our only physician. Glasses, which I had worn practically all my life, were soon laid aside. This was brought about entirely by the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The practitioner, who had been called to treat another member of the family, urged me to read Science and Health, and after two or three days I was convinced that this was the truth. I did not understand all I read, but believed what I did understand. I saw that I had no need of glasses and removed them, and have never used them since, although previous to this I could not leave them off even for a short while without pain. Four years have passed, and during that time there have been many wonderful cures in our family, for God has daily been healing our diseases and forgiving our iniquities.
