WHAT IS A TREATMENT?

From the March 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ON page 72of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says, "God, good, being ever present, it follows in divine logic that evil, the suppositional opposite of good, is never present." From the logical process of this reasoning it must follow that if God is ever present, in God's presence there can be nothing that needs to be healed. That God is, precludes the possibility of a patient or a sick man. Man, made in the image and likeness of God, is the embodiment of God's nature. It follows as a scientific truth that every son of God is without blemish, defect, deformity, or disease.

When Jesus said, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise," he declared the scientific truth that God is the only healer. Scientifically defined, Christian Science practice is seen to be the action of that consciousness which knows the allness and ever-presence of God. This understanding heals the sick, reforms the sinner, and raises the dead. A realization of the supremacy of Truth over all evil reveals to the individual understanding the great truism that in God's universe there is no matter to be sick, no sick man, no patient to be healed.

When students of Christian Science realize the importance of knowing just what treatment really means and is, they will learn, among other definitions, that treatment is the word of God. A treatment, then, may be defined as a realization by the practitioner of the divine presence, "God with us," which heals the sick. It has been said that Jesus met every claim which presented itself to him as a sick man, or a dead man, or a sinner, from the basis of his own understanding. And what does this mean? It means that Jesus' understanding of the allness of God, and the consequent nothingness of anything opposite to the divine nature, gave him a mastery over every form of error. He simply refused to believe a lie about God and God's perfect universe. Jesus knew God and His perfect idea, and this understanding healed every belief of life in matter.
