My object in writing this testimony is to give praise to whom praise is due, by expressing my deep feeling of gratitude for the benefit I have received through Christian Science. When I reached man's estate, on looking for proof of the teachings of the church in which I had been brought up I found that it was lacking, and as a consequence I became an infidel. I remained in this mental attitude for many years, until finally I was stricken with a very serious illness and was healed through Christian Science. I was no stranger, to this religion, as my dearly beloved elder sister had been a Scientist for a great many years, but although I knew of the wonderful benefit she had derived through this teaching, still it did not appeal to me; in fact I scarcely gave the matter a thought, except when ridiculing it or arguing against it.
Early in June, 1917, after retiring feeling as well as usual, I was stricken during the night with the most severe pains I had ever experienced, due to gallstones. I could neither lie down nor sit down, but instead walked the floor continually, hoping for relief. I finally requested my wife to call a physician, but she said she would call a Christian Science practitioner instead. I offered no objection, as I knew she was very much interested in this new-old religion, so a practitioner was called and absent treatment given me. After one hour relief was experienced and I slept for a couple of hours, but the next morning the trouble returned, so the practitioner came to the house. It was necessary for him to continue the visits for four days before I was entirely relieved. Since then I have never used a material remedy and have had no desire to do so, but I have never felt better in all my life. I am truly grateful to Mrs. Eddy for giving us the understanding of the healing power of Truth. At the same time I was healed permanently of hay fever, from which I had been a sufferer for more than twenty years.
I was given a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and "Miscellaneous Writings" by the same author, and it is my desire to learn more of this wonderful truth. I also enjoy reading the Sentinel and all the authorized literature. My wife and I have not missed attending Sunday services, except a few times, since my healing. We also derive great benefit as a result of the study of the Lesson-Sermon, for all of which we are sincerely grateful.—Milwaukee, Wis.
