Testimonies of Healing

When Christian Science was first...

From the May 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Christian Science was first brought to my notice some twelve years ago, I was not looking for any particular physical healing, but it was not long before I was able to apply its glorious teaching to minor physical defects that were quickly overcome. Being a son of the manse, I was, as one might say, brought up in the faith, and although I had taken an active part in ordinary church work of the old faith, including Sunday school, social reform, and temperance, I was not satisfied; nor indeed had I a reason for the faith that was in me. I am very grateful now that, in spite of strong advice to the contrary by a near relative who is a medical doctor, I did look into "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy when that storehouse of good was presented to me.

During the years that I have been interested in and have studied Mrs. Eddy's works along with the Bible, I have been enabled through my own understanding of Principle as taught by Mrs. Eddy, to overcome, among other discordant conditions, poor eyesight, that required constant wearing of glasses. These glasses have long since been discarded, and severe toothache, which was an old and persistent companion, was destroyed over eleven years ago and I have not been troubled since. I was healed in two days of an injury to an ankle that a surgeon said was a fracture of one of the ankle bones. In the army I was able to overcome a severe form of ulcer, and during the so-called influenza epidemic, I was instantaneously healed of what seemed to material sense a severe attack of that fear one night while reading a lecture on Christian Science.

For help through Christian Science treatment I am most grateful, and with joy relate an experience of instantaneous healing. At the time I was staying in the country and was suddenly attacked by a sense of choking. This became so acute that I was desperate and after suffering intense agony, felt I was nearing the end of this existence. My wife had communicated with a practitioner but he did not get word until late that night. By this time I was nigh helpless and hopeless, but I found myself struggling to repeat the Lord's Prayer as I could get breath and I immediately got relief, fell asleep, and wakened in the morning, healed. Later it was learned that at the same time as I commenced working for myself, the practitioner had commenced absent treatment.
