[Written for the Journal]

A PRAYER

From the September 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

O Heavenly Father, let me know
Myself, and see
The faults and sins that separate
My heart from Thee;
And let me see above, beyond
The mists so dense,
My own real self, the blessed child
Of Soul, not sense.

And as this vision, calm and clear,
Dawns on my sight.
Let selfishness and earth-born pride
Die;—and contrite
My heart bring this, in man's
Extremity;
Its only sacrifice the gift,
Humility.

And give me love to heal and lift
The fallen up;
To loose the captives' chains and share
The healing cup.
For Truth has taught me kindly this
Precept of Thine:
Self-knowledge, love, humility—
The way divine.
