"ANOTHER YEAR"

From the January 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During the war it was rightly hoped that a time of better work, wiser thinking, and real progress of all sorts would follow the stir. Yet, merely to look to the future, it has been proved, may be to ignore the good of the present. In spite of any seeming siege of passion at its worst, the day of true success is always at hand in the now. When one lives and acts in the present which the divine Mind knows, a supposed future can arouse no dread. The time for the best work, the wisest thinking, and the most vital progress is to-day, no matter what turmoil there may seem to be in the world.

Talk about a new world order, which too often denotes only a futile concept of an earthly heaven, will lead to nothing unless it is seen that the real order must be Mind, or Spirit, expressed, quite apart from the belief in a world of matter. Living in Spirit now and always, the perfect man in the divine likeness dwells in the one divine Life itself, and thus is in the kingdom of heaven. To the extent that one discerns and relies on the order of infinite Mind, instead of on matter, just so much of the false belief in discord or sordid doing of any kind must vanish. In this way only do old things pass away and all things become new through the practice of Christian Science. One's sense of living is improved by Truth alone, which unfolds its idea with vigor that prevails over what never has been real.

An improved sense of affairs is one step in advance. Still, the one who is looking to Mind for guidance and freedom is not merely watching for evil to vanish, nor for a human sense of things to improve. Rather is he finding and knowing the real good. In other words, he is eager to use the light of Mind, and not simply to see the clouds melt away. This true light is present, to be proved and used, in the very midst of what may seem to finite human vision the darkest of mortal times. Knowing the truth is proving the one Mind as the only Mind, being conscious of divine Love. It is not just a setting out to improve mortal beliefs. In the end, all human belief must give way to the idea of Spirit, which always has been true. This is the ideal which Christian Science presents to the world.
