A few years ago I was taken ill...

From the September 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A few years ago I was taken ill with pneumonia. I may say that I had been in the liquor business for twenty-five years; not that I am proud of it, but nevertheless that was the business I was in. After my sickness, I had a very bad cough which was crowing worse right along, and the following month my family doctor told me that I had tuberculosis and it would be necessary for me to close up or have some one run the business for me while I went out into the country for the rest of the summer. On the twenty-ninth of that month my license came due and I did not decide to close the place until three o'clock that afternoon. I know now that it was God's will that I should close. After that I went to see another doctor but as he did not give me any hope I went to one of the best lung specialists in the city, and his verdict was the same. His advice was for me to go home and rest, which I did. During the latter part of July, August, and September of that year I continued to grow weaker.

I had an old friend who had turned to Christian Science several years before and when we met he would ask me how I was and I would tell him I was all right, as I knew he wanted to talk to me about Christian Science. One evening he and his wife came out to visit us, as he had heard that I could not last much longer but I did not give him an opportunity to talk about Christian Science and they left without even mentioning it. I was growing weaker and the belief was that I had but two weeks more to live, but the thought came to me: "Why not try Christian Science? If it does not do you any good, it will not do you any harm." I immediately called up my friend and told him that I was ready, that I wanted Christian Science treatment. He went with me to purchase a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and he told me I would get a great deal of help from reading the book.

After my first treatment, on my way home I boarded a crowded street car and was not able to get near an open window. Formerly I had to sit by an open window, as it was hard for me to breathe. This time I was standing in the crowd and forgot all about the window until I was almost home, when then was an opportunity for me to sit down, and then I remembered that I had been standing in the crowd all the way. From that day on, fear was destroyed. My healing his been slow but I am glad, for it has made mo study and learn to know more about God than I ever did before. I have had many other beautiful demonstrations of the healing power of God, who is Life. Truth, and Love, and I am indeed grateful to Mrs. Eddy who has unfolded to all humanity the truth which makes us free.—
