Testimonies of Healing

It is now many years since I...

From the September 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is now many years since I first became seriously interested in the study of Christian Science. I was not in need of physical healing at that time but was anxious to do all I could to help a dear sister regain her health. She had a few treatments but obtained her healing largely from the study of our Leader's writings, reading the Christian Science periodicals, and attending the church services. For those early years of earnest effort to depend upon God I have since had cause to be grateful, although at the time it seemed that understanding came slowly. From the beginning of my study of it Christian Science gave me an understanding of God that made life worth living, and each day brings clearer views of Him and fresh reasons for rejoicing.

Several years ago I found that I was suffering from a discordant physical condition that threatened to become chronic. I was very busy at the time and as it did not seriously interfere with my daily duties I neglected taking the matter up in earnest until it had continued for a period of nearly two years, I was sometimes better, sometimes worse, but it was seldom entirely absent from my thought. One summer evening, when it seemed necessary for me to wait outside during a meeting, the thought came to me that since it was dark and I could not read I would use that time to try to rid myself of belief in that discordant condition. More than two hours were spent in trying to realize the allness of the one perfect Mind and the impossibility of there being any other consciousness, and in replacing the specific error with the true idea. No immediate relief was felt, but the next day when I was at my desk doing some clerical work the realization came to me that I was well. More than that, the seeming reality of the so-called mortal mind was so lessened that for many days thereafter I had a glimpse of a new heaven and a new earth. The old error presented its claim several times after that but it was quickly proved that its power over me was destroyed.

I have had many struggles with error and many healings. When the healing has been difficult or slow it has been a source of satisfaction to see afterwards where the trouble lay and to know it was not because of any lack in Christian Science but because its rules had not been adhered to. I am grateful for all the Christian Science activities instituted by Mrs. Eddy, for the church services, reading rooms, the lectures, and the periodicals. I am particularly grateful for The Christian Science Monitor.
