Testimonies of Healing

Some years ago, purely out of curiosity...

From the July 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some years ago, purely out of curiosity I attended a Christian Science Wednesday evening meeting, and, although the Christian Science teaching seemed to me too idealistic and Utopian to be practical, I found myself continuing to attend the Wednesday evening meetings. Then a Sunday service was visited; also I procured a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and read and pondered it every spare moment until I had finished the book.

For many years I had been very dependent on glasses, always having two pairs, so that if one pair became broken or lost the other was available. Shortly after my first attendance at a Christian Science service, and in fact before I had completed the reading of the textbook, as one pair of glasses had been very badly broken and I was very fearful lest something happen to the other pair, I took them off, placed them in a case, and carried them in my muff; however, it was discovered on reaching home that they had been lost. Advertisements were inserted in all the local papers, but the glasses were not returned. Thereupon, it occurred to me (since it would now be necessary to have my eyes refitted) to try Christian Science for a healing. A practitioner was visited, and in one treatment the healing was accomplished. Also, up to this time I had been annoyed with tumors on my eyelids from time to time, having had, I think, perhaps twenty of them in all. Sometimes they had been removed by external applications, but ofttimes it was found necessary to have them removed surgically. Almost immediately after this healing of the use of glasses, a tumor appeared on one eyelid; but it disappeared after two treatments in Christian Science.

Since that time I have experienced and witnessed many healings in Christian Science; but while grateful for them all they are not to be compared to the higher, larger, richer blessings which have followed the acceptance and application of the truth. The Bible has become a new book since applying the teachings of Christian Science. Where it had been to me before but a series of narratives, it became a book of promise, a series of interesting and absorbing lessons, ever pointing to the "calm and clear verdict of Truth against error'' (Science and Health, p. 358). Fear of the unknown and of death has given place to the higher understanding of God as Principle, and of man's spiritual and eternal individuality. Worry and anxiety about loved ones have been superseded with a calm sense of the security of all in God's protecting care.—
