TRUE LIBERATION

From the July 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sooner or later every student of Christian Science comes to know that true freedom inheres only in the activity of the one Mind. An evidence of that activity is seen in the irresistible urge which has constantly impelled mankind toward the realization of an ever larger sense of freedom, breaking the bonds of materiality and revealing man's native state of perfection. Lacking an understanding of divine Principle and its law, all too often mankind has failed to recognize the character and purpose of this movement; and in consequence, its efforts for liberation have been a mole-like tunneling toward the light.

With mankind seeking freedom from a multiplicity of false beliefs, all of which connote limitation, one at all accustomed to metaphysical reasoning naturally and justifiably questions: Does the promised release have to do with true liberty, "the glorious liberty of the children of God,"—that freedom from the bondage of materiality which the militant apostle declared should be the experience of the creature of the flesh; or is it by the interchange of false beliefs, merely a shift from one form of mortal mind slavery to another, a setting free of material beliefs to a larger activity, without that transformation which results only from the renewing of the mind, which constitutes the new birth, the spiritualization of consciousness?

If the liberation partakes of the first-named, then it is not of men, but of God; and constitutes true freedom. If it consists merely of an exchange of taskmasters, the shifting from one set of illusory beliefs to another, or the setting free of mortal mind without that change in quality of thought which constitutes evangelization, then, indeed, it bears no relation to true freedom; and may develop into a mental condition even more binding and baneful, together with a stronger belief as to its own potency. The inevitable result of Christian healing is to improve mankind.
