About three years ago I had a beautiful demonstration in Christian Science. I was one of a house party of friends at a little resort on the California coast. I was the only Christian Scientist in the party. This particular morning I had arisen before the others and had walked down to the sea, and had there read the Lesson-Sermon. After breakfast, with the others, I started for a walk along the cliff. The beauty of the scenery and the sense of the omnipresence of God were constantly with me. Suddenly, without my knowing just what happened, the edge of the cliff on which I was standing gave way, and I was hurled headlong over the seventy-five or one hundred foot embankment. My only thought, as I felt myself going, was, "I am God's child." The power of God was immediately shown; for instead of falling the full distance to the rocks and sea below, I was caught on a tiny ledge about halfway down. My first sense was of intense pain; and mortal mind said, "Either your back is broken or you will be a cripple for life." But almost instantly came the true thought, "No, God's child is not hurt." By the time the friends were able to find a way to crawl down the steep cliff to me, I had managed to get to a half-sitting posture. They were so frightened by the blood on my face and hands, and other manifestations, that I was obliged to do the directing as to the course to pursue. I asked one of them to get to the village as soon as possible, and, as there were no practitioners there, to call by long distance telephone to one in Riverside.
In about an hour I was able to get to the top of the cliff with the help of the two friends. There we waited for about another hour for the car to come. By three o'clock in the afternoon I asked to be taken the sixty miles back to Riverside; for I felt that my healing would be more rapid could I be with Christian Scientists. So, very lovingly, the car was prepared for me with pillows, and I was taken home. Upon my arrival the practitioner came to me and gave me more help. The pain left very soon after this, so that I slept the greater part of the night. This occurred on the Wednesday before Easter. On Friday I was able to walk eight blocks to dinner. The joy of this healing has always been with me; for through it I realized the omnipotence of God and His protection, which continue to be unfolded to me through my study of the Bible and of Mrs. Eddy's writings.
I wish to express the deep gratitude that is in my heart to God for His wonderful gift, Christian Science; to Christ Jesus, the Wayshower; and to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the revelator of Truth to this age; also to the loving practitioner who, by her understanding of God as revealed in Christian Science, was able to lift me out of this experience of pain and fear.— Riverside, California.
