I was on the stage for many years, and from childhood had been afflicted with constipation. Each day I was obliged to use material remedies, and in almost every city where I appeared I consulted the best doctors, but without results. Sickness and medicine were constantly before me, and each morning I wakened with an intense headache and nausea.
Later I was sent abroad to have my voice cultivated. Upon arriving in Germany, I lost no opportunity in visiting the eminent physicians; and after several remedies, which afforded only temporary relief, I found I was suffering a great deal more. A few weeks later I went to Milan, Italy, and while there met a lady from the United States of America. She told me she had been an invalid for twenty-seven years and had been healed through the study of Christian Science. "'God is no respecter of persons,'" she said, "and He can do the same for you."
In a short time I left for London; and upon my departure this lady presented me with a set of Mrs. Eddy's books. She also gave me the name and address of a practitioner in London. I immediately placed the books and address in the bottom of my trunk, well out of sight, not intending to use them.
