Testimonies of Healing

"Let your light so shine before...

From the November 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." About six years ago people moved near me who were Christian Scientists. This was the first time I had heard of this beautiful religion, which has indeed put me on the new road of life. Having left England through circumstances over which I had no control, I was very unhappy, discouraged, and sometimes did not know what to do. One of these friends began to pass me The Christian Science Monitor, which we lovingly accepted and appreciated, thinking it to be a very practical newspaper and free from crime. Later, I was handed a Christian Science Sentinel, and as I read I rejoiced to find there really was such a beautiful religion, one that also healed disease. Never having been able to enjoy reading much, particularly at night, I was astonished to find myself reading very late without discomfort. For sixteen years I had been enslaved to the bondage of glasses. Specialists in England said I would never be able to do without them.

About three years ago I took a mental inventory of my thoughts and found I had one resentful thought I had to let go. I was grateful to be able to bring this thought into captivity "to the obedience of Christ." Several days afterward my glasses annoyed me, and I felt now that they were troublesome I did not need them. I went out full of joy, and was grateful to be able to read the signs on the passing street cars.

Chronic headaches, ingrowing nails, catarrh, bronchitis, and frequent attacks of influenza have all vanished into their native nothingness through the understanding that good alone is real and evil is unreal. At one time influenza presented itself, and error wanted to say I could not fill my place at the Christian Science services. The thought immediately came, "There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." I was free; the discord was destroyed in a few hours, and I went about my Father's business. One healing, which occurred about five years ago, stands out in my experience as a beacon light. It was the healing of a carbuncle which manifested itself on the back of my neck and caused me great pain. My dear friend, who is a practitioner, came and read the Lesson-Sermon with me, but I experienced great discontentment. My husband being away at the time working, I said I would go home to England and not stay here to be unhappy. She lovingly rebuked me, and that evening she gave me help. I went to bed and cleansed my mental home. Next morning I awoke free.
