THE LAW OF GOOD

From the November 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1) Mary Baker Eddy answers the question, "How would you define Christian Science?" as follows: "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Here the law of good is presented as one in intent with the law of God; and in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 286) Mrs. Eddy says, "In the Saxon and twenty other tongues good is the term for God." Thus we have authority in our Leader's writings for the declaration that the law of God is the law of good; and, knowing what this law is, we know what Christian Science is.

God's law was given to us in the earliest Scriptural writings. It is conveyed in the first chapter of Genesis thus: "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." This was the result of the perfect law of good for which all mankind is yearning—a good creator and a good creation; and to know this is to know the meaning and the loveliness of Christian Science. God, good, producing good, like producing like, is the unchangeable law of creation, which, like the creator, is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever.

The law of good has always been available for all mankind. It was seen in some degree by the prophets, and they were delivered from their enemies to the extent of their obedience to it. Jesus, in the fullness of his understanding and obedience to God's law, demonstrated that this universal law of good was the way of salvation from sickness, sin, and death for all humanity. Notwithstanding the proof of this law that our great Master gave to the world, it was largely lost sight of probably about three centuries after the crucifixion; but as it was still the unchangeable law of creation, Mrs. Eddy, in the inevitable march of progress, rediscovered its omnipresence and omnipotence and named it Christian Science.
