A few years ago I was very sick; in fact, so much so that one day I thought I was dying. I was alone at the time. Instinctively I went to the telephone and called a Christian Science practitioner and asked if he would come to our home at once as I was too sick to go to him. He very lovingly said he would. When I had hung up the receiver and turned from the telephone I thought: Now, as never before, I am going to rely on Christian Science. I am not going to think or say, I do not understand it. I am going to accept what is told me; in other words, be receptive.
The practitioner arrived, and after I had described the symptoms I was going through I said, "And now my time has come; I feel that I am going to die." But he said tenderly: "But why do you prepare for death? Why do you not prepare for life?" He talked long, telling me of the truth, and I listened as receptively as I knew how. When he arose to take his departure, Christian Science treatment was decided upon and he told me to read daily from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
After he had gone many hours were spent in deep meditation, and I slept well that night. But when I came downstairs one or two mornings later and walked to the library table where Science and Health was lying, I was so sick that I thought, How can I read? But what our Master said about the little children came into my thought, and I reminded myself that I had become receptive—I had become as a little child, and a good child is obedient; and I began to read. I read and strove to imbibe the spirit of what I read, and all of a sudden a wonderful thing happened. It seemed as though the whole room was flooded with light, and I was lifted right out of that illness—I was healed instantaneously. To me this was beautiful, and I am humbly grateful.
