Testimonies of Healing

At the time Christian Science...

From the August 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At the time Christian Science found me I was a hopeless sufferer, struggling to find God and knowing I could be made well if only I could understand Him. After six years of suffering I was almost at the end, for the best physicians I could find in Houston, Texas, told me they could do nothing more for me. One said that as I had refused to be operated on so many times I was beyond the aid of the surgeon's knife, and must just take opiates to relieve me until the end came. I sat straight up in bed and said, "Well, if you cannot heal me God can and will; so please do not come back any more." I was suffering from cancerous tumors in the abdomen and stomach, also from bowel trouble. I could eat only the lightest of foods, and took medicine every night. My whole left side was useless. I could scarcely use my arm, and my hips were stiff.

The family took me to San Antonio thinking the climate might prolong my days, but I only grew worse. My husband was employed with an optical firm there, and the wife of his employer had been healed of tuberculosis through Christian Science. When she heard of my condition she came to see me and told me about her healing and the wonderful things that were being done daily in Christian Science. The next day she sent me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The first night I read all the testimonies in the back of the book, and went to sleep about midnight feeling positive I had found something to comfort and bless; but I never thought of being healed. Next day I read the chapter on Prayer. I read most of the day, and was able to get up and eat dinner with the family. I was instantaneously healed; but somehow I did not grasp the fact, although I began to do anything I wished and there had been no pain since I read the testimonials. It was all so beautiful and wonderful to my darkened sense that it took me two weeks to realize I was truly healed, and then someone else reminded me that I must be well for I was doing about the house the things a well woman could do. About eight months later the doctor who had tried to be kind and to do all he could for me came to that city, and when he saw me walking he said, "Surely this is the work of God, for you were past the aid of man."

Our daughters have been healed of many things, and I have had many wonderful financial demonstrations which I worked out myself. I am grateful that through the application of the truth as found in our textbook, I can meet and master the erroneous beliefs that present themselves. I cannot think of words to express my love and gratitude to God; to Christ Jesus; and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who toiled and worked to give the light of Truth to mankind, Truth which heals every ill that "flesh is heir to."—
