Christian Science came into my life twelve years ago, after I had been confined to my bed for five months with what physicians called "miliary tuberculosis." I did not then know that it is frequently considered fatal, but I did know my condition was growing more serious. I was not being given any medicine.
At this time my thoughts turned toward Christian Science, for in my association with Christian Scientists I had received a few impressions. I knew they did not admit there was sensation in matter and that they denied disease; so I began to deny each manifestation of pain, cough, and other conditions peculiar to the disease. I worked on alone, ever conscious of the presence of God and of the words, Cast all your anxiety upon the Lord "for he careth for you." Soon I began to notice that the manifestations appeared less frequently and were of shorter duration; and, finally, I was able to feed myself and read a little from the Sentinel, which was brought to our home by a neighbor.
In May I was able to sit out in the yard. I asked for the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I earnestly read, and began to apply its teachings. Mortal mind had laid down many laws, and my progress was slow. In September I went to another state to accept a position, but it was almost two years before I was free from all symptoms of this trouble.
