When I turned to Christian Science for healing, I had been suffering for five years from what the physicians termed nervous prostration. Insomnia, extreme weakness, and stomach trouble had quite spoiled my girlhood and made me a semi-invalid. I remember with gratitude the kind friends who first aroused my interest in Christian Science, and also my desire to own and study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. They answered my eager questions wisely, and impressed upon me the importance of obedience to our Leader's teachings. They warned me against reading unauthorized literature erroneously purporting to be Christian Science. As the years have passed I have found the Bible, the writings of our revered Leader, and the periodicals published by The Christian Science Publishing Society sufficient guides on my journey heavenward.
One treatment from a Christian Science practitioner healed me of insomnia. That was my first healing, and it was a very convincing proof of the healing power of Truth. Further treatment overcame many morbid fears, among which was that of eating certain foods. My return to a normal sense of strength and activity came gradually as I gained spiritual enlightenment through earnest study. I had been very self-centered, and the stultifying effect of this form of selfishness had almost paralyzed normal activity, both mental and physical. The teachings of Christian Science turned my thought from self to God and gave me new interest, new impetus.
During the years which have followed my first healing, I have labored, as Mrs. Eddy counsels on page 242 of Science and Health, "to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love, —which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death." Many battles have been fought and many victories won.
