When Pilate asked Jesus if he were a king, the answer came, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth." As I pondered these words it was borne in upon me that I was not doing all I could to follow the example of Jesus by bearing witness to the truth which had been revealed to me through the blessed teachings of Christian Science.
As a young girl of fifteen I attended a lecture by a learned minister, who quoted passages from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy and endeavored to disprove them according to his philosophy. So enthralling were some of these quoted citations to my hungering heart that I hurried home to my father, who was then battling unsuccessfully with what he considered an incurable disease. I told him some of the things I had heard and begged him to find out more about Christian Science. But he gently told me to think no more about it, as the minister had undoubtedly been right. This was a bitter disappointment; and I answered, "Oh, but would it not be wonderful if it only could be true!"
After six years of struggle over lack, continual sickness, and strenuous efforts to obtain an education under difficult circumstances, I found myself in possession of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and sought out a practitioner. Soon I began to prove in my own experience that these hope-inspiring, healing passages were indeed true. Gradually I was healed of a chronic rheumatic condition which at times had crippled me completely, of serious liver trouble, and of other ills, as well as of internal disorders which were said to have resulted from a severe fall, and for which I had received osteopathic treatments for two years, with the final recommendation that I be operated upon, as the osteopaths could not relieve the condition.
