CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AND YOUNG PEOPLE

From the January 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

MUCH is said these days about the difference between the youth of a generation ago and the young people of our time. The comparison is not always either a favorable or a happy one. The children of yesteryears are often painted in colors that glow, whereas those of this year of grace may be depicted in less attractive hue. In my time, muses a self-righteous elder, we never did thus and so! Possibly not, but what about the thinking? Is the carnal mind more carnal to-day than twenty-five or fifty years ago? Are we not seeing the errors of the carnal mind uncovered and brought into the open, as never before?

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our inspired Leader, Mrs. Eddy, paints a great word picture in this paragraph (p. 540): "The muddy river-bed must be stirred in order to purify the stream. In moral chemicalization, when the symptoms of evil, illusion, are aggravated, we may think in our ignorance that the Lord hath wrought an evil; but we ought to know that God's law uncovers so-called sin and its effects, only that Truth may annihilate all sense of evil and all power to sin."

Truly are we living at a great moment in human history. The spiritual truth of being, for which the ages have longed and sought, has been revealed in our time. The prophets of Scripture had foretold its coming; the great Nazarene promised it as "the Spirit of truth" and as "the Comforter." Both the prophets and the Master, however, warned that a fermentation or upheaval would accompany the appearing of the saving spiritual idea, for the very nature of Truth is to turn the searchlight on everything unlike itself. So Truth brings the light which destroys every mean, low, devastating thought.
