The method of spiritual healing practiced by Christian Scientists is far other than the application of spiritually unenlightened human intelligence. True, intelligence underlies Christian Science practice; but it is divine intelligence, the intelligence of Mind. The thought of the Christian Scientist who is practicing Christian Science successfully is clear and alert; and it is clear and alert because of his understanding and demonstration of divine law, and his comparative freedom from materiality. Spiritual healing, the healing which Christian Science makes plain, can be practiced only by those who have intelligently grasped the letter of divine Science, and who have attained to a degree the truly Christian spirit.
The Christian Scientist starts from divine Principle in his work of healing; that is, he begins by affirming the truth about God, about God's law, and about God's creation. And what is this truth which is so important? It is, among other spiritual facts, that God and His creation, man, are perfect; and that divine law perpetually governs the relationship between God and man. Where the unenlightened human consciousness sees inharmony, the Christian Scientist endeavors to behold God and His expression, the latter perfectly sustained by perfect law; and thus does he bring divinely illumined intelligence to bear on whatever inharmonious condition may appear to present itself to him.
The knowing of the truth about God and man and about the relationship existing between them may be regarded as a purely intellectual effort; and in a sense this is so. But to be of reliable healing value it must have become solid conviction; and this is possible only to thought which is spiritualized. "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Only as thought is purged from sin, weaned from materiality, becomes unselfish, loving, compassionate, and pure, can we see God, know the truth about God and His perfect spiritual creation, and thus be equipped to destroy the material falsities that hold mankind bound to the false beliefs of sin, disease, and death.
