Testimonies of Healing

Deep gratitude impels me to...

From the August 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

[Original testimony in German]

Deep gratitude impels me to testify to a wonderful healing which I experienced through Christian Science. In January, 1927, I gave birth to a little daughter. The birth went well, but twenty-four hours later I was seized with such severe pain all over my body that I was unable to move at all. I was completely paralyzed, and the pain became unbearable. Physicians came and went; but in spite of hypodermics, medicines, bandages, and narcotics, no help was received. For about a week, although given the strongest opiates, I did not have a moment's sleep. For a time I lost the power of speech. Then one physician remarked that he had never come across such a case in his practice. He proposed to give me chloroform so as to take me to the nearest hospital (otherwise I could not be moved), in order to spare my family the sight of my sufferings. In the anguish of my heart I prayed to God again and again, "Help me, that I need not go to the hospital, whence I may never again return."

"Man's extremity" was "God's opportunity." A Christian Science practitioner came to see me. After looking only in the anxious, careworn eyes of my dear ones, I looked suddenly into eyes shining with the firm conviction of God's healing power. What a thrill of happiness ran through me! Oh, how grateful I was to God, who had heard my deep prayer, and in whom I had found help at the last moment! The nerve twitching stopped after the first treatment, and my appetite returned somewhat. Peace entered all our hearts, and we had the assurance that God was our healer. After the second treatment I was able to sleep for half an hour; and so, gradually, the healing progressed. Although there were some hours in which error overpowered me, and I seemed unable to master it, yet the practitioner ever put me on the right path when I was near despair. Gradually different parts of the body regained their usefulness, and in the beginning of March I was able to make my first attempts at walking again. My legs were still greatly swollen, but this condition also disappeared.
