I have had many healings in Christian Science, but the one that stands out most clearly is my first, because it proved to me beyond a shadow of doubt that Christian Science is indeed the truth, which Christ Jesus said "shall make you free."
In May, 1918, at the age of fifteen, I was taken to a hospital after being in bed four months under the care of doctors. There I was treated for ten days and was given seven kinds of medicine at the same time. As no improvement was noted, the doctor decided that it would be best for me to go to a hot spring health resort about six hundred miles from my home to try the mineral waters there, which were said to be a sure cure for rheumatism—for this was thought to be my ailment. Accordingly, I left the hospital and was accompanied to the health resort by my sister. After staying with me at the hospital there for two days, she secured a room with two ladies, who proved to be Christian Scientists.
I had always believed in prayer, and had studied the Bible a great deal, although I could not seem to understand it. I had never heard of Christian Science, and believed that God healed through medicine. During the time spent in bed at home I had prayed earnestly to be made well, as I dreaded unspeakably to be sent away to a hospital. I was a nervous, timid child and had never been able to take care of myself; and I had never been away from home.
