When I was a child, my" father taught me the Bible from a strictly orthodox standpoint, stressing, however, the power and availability of prayer. This I accepted as the keynote of Christianity, and early formed the habit of taking everything to God in prayer. But while many of my prayers were answered, often some were not, and this caused me to make a special study of answered prayer. It was while engaged in this occupation, seeking earnestly for light and more understanding, that I was divinely led to Christian Science.
Though I had never known a Christian Scientist or seen any of the literature. I had. in a far-off way, heard of its healings; and one day a reliable friend told me of a lady who had been healed of numerous troubles by Christian Science treatment. Mrs. Eddy must have searched the Scriptures diligently, I thought, and no doubt has already found this unfailing prayer for which I am searching; Christian Science might help me, and might save me an immense amount of time and research.
Later on, when I was teaching in an orthodox college of six hundred students, my attention was called to a sixteen-year-old girl who was considered the wonder of the school and a lovely character—the only objection found to her being that she was a Christian Scientist. This interested me. Soon, at my request, she brought me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Think what awaited me in that wonderful chapter on Prayer! The next Sunday I attended a Christian Science church, where I found a loyal practitioner, who has since led me through healing and demonstration to membership in The Mother Church as well as in a branch church.
