I want to tell of some of the blessings that have come to me through the study and application of Christian Science as revealed by our revered Leader. Through this teaching I am learning that "God's promises are kept."
I did not become interested in this Science for physical healing, but in order to find a religion that I could really practice. I had been brought up to attend church and later became a member, but I did not find an answer to my many questions. When I was small, a friend took me to a Christian Science Sunday School and I always declared afterward that I would be a Scientist. I did not know where to find it then, but years later the textbook was placed in my hands. I devoured it, reading every minute I could spare. When I had read it halfway through I became ill. A physician was called, as I did not think of applying Christian Science for physical ills. He pronounced the disease typhoid malarial fever. When I had been in bed for two weeks, and seemed worse instead of better, a lady called. She was a stranger, and although not a Scientist herself she told me of one and asked me if I wanted her to call. The Scientist came at once and I asked for a treatment. While she was with me I fell asleep and slept for some time, this being the first normal sleep I had had since the trouble started. When I awoke I was healed. I got up, dressed, and ate a meal. My sister had been wired for, and when she came I met her at the station. She was astonished, as she was expecting me to pass on. I had had this ailment before, with a record of twenty-eight days in a hospital, and I had had to walk with crutches for two months afterward. One can realize my gratitude for this instantaneous healing, with no after effects.
I have also been healed of a throat affection. I do not know what a doctor would have called it. For ten days I was unable to eat or swallow even water; then this trouble vanished, but a swelling appeared on the outside of the throat. This swelling finally opened and disappeared, but in about a year it reappeared. I went to a dentist to have a tooth extracted. He refused to do the work, and wanted to give me a card to a throat specialist, saying he thought I needed an operation. But instead I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner, and in a short time the swelling opened and disappeared. The practitioner wrote, "The only operation we need is the operation of God's law;" and it has proved so, for six years have passed and there has been no return of the trouble.
