UNFAILING DIVINE GUIDANCE

From the October 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE Christian Scientist is greatly blessed by being able to turn to God for guidance and help at any moment. Mortal existence seems constantly to be presenting to mankind problems of sickness, wrongdoing, sorrow, and lack, and in consequence men are repeatedly finding themselves confronted with difficulties which call for immediate action. And how is it with the majority of them? They rely on material methods for the healing of disease; they have no scientific way of handling sin; they trust human reason alone to help them in determining how they shall act in any particular difficulty. It has to be acknowledged that God is not in their thoughts; that they know Him not, and therefore are unable to obtain His aid.

Christian Science is changing all this. It is teaching mankind the truth about God and the real man, making known the true relationship existing between them; and as this understanding is gained men are able to apply it to all their problems. What does Christian Science teach about God? Among other things, that He is Mind—infinite intelligence. What does it teach about man? That he is Mind's idea. And as the truth about God and man is known, it becomes clear that man is never separate from Mind, infinite intelligence. Mere human reason is incapable of revealing these things, since it can take no cognizance of spiritual being. It is spiritual sense alone which tells us of God and man, and of the perpetual unity existing between them.

Now while God is Mind, infinite intelligence, He is also infinite good. Hence man, His idea, must reflect the perfect qualities of Mind. Thus, man never ceases to possess, by reflection, intelligence, alertness, ability, activity—indeed, every perfect quality of Mind. The student of Christian Science is aware of this; and when problems confront him he strives to realize the truth about man, denying at the same time the erroneous beliefs of material sense, knowing that in this way he will receive the divine guidance he needs for the solution of his problems.
