As a very young girl I began to doubt the teachings of the orthodox church in which I had been brought up; and after many discussions I gained my mother's consent to stop going to Sunday school. Not very long after this I realized that there was nothing in the beliefs of that church to which I could subscribe, and I left it. Then began my search for the truth about God, man. and life, and for satisfactory answers to all the questions about these subjects. In the years following I attended churches of different denominations and read what I could find on comparative religions in my endeavor to discover one that would seem true and logical and intelligent. Finally, Christian Science was brought to my attention; and when I began to read the textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I knew that I had at last found the religion for which I had been seeking so earnestly. It answered all my questions logically and intelligently and demonstrably.
During the next few years I had some wonderful physical healings in Christian Science. One was of influenza. During a so-called epidemic I felt the symptoms of this disease, which I recognized as I had had it before and had been ill for three weeks under medical treatment. I telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner for help about nine-thirty in the morning, and by noon that day I was entirely well. I was also healed of malaria in one treatment. I had contracted it in the tropics and had had recurrent attacks of it during one whole summer there under a doctor's care. The following summer I spent in the United States, and one morning I felt a return of this illness. As I was not feeling well enough to talk on the telephone, I sent a note to a practitioner asking her to treat me: and the next day I awoke free and well, and have never had a return of the trouble. This healing took place over ten years ago. I was also healed of a pain which I had had in my side since childhood, and for which I had consulted and been treated by several doctors. In one visit to a practitioner after I came into Christian Science this pain left me. This was about nine years ago, and it has never returned. When my husband passed on, the sense of grief was lifted from me during the first visit of a practitioner, to such an extent that the members of my family who were not Christian Scientists said that it seemed as if a miracle had been performed.
Christian Science has made life over for me, and is transforming a very sensitive, selfish person into a woman more kind and considerate, whose one desire is to show by daily living the efficacy and redeeming power and blessings of Christian Science and to help others toward an understanding of this truth. Every day I am more grateful that it has come into my life; grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, for class teaching, and for the unselfed life of our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy. — Richmond, Virginia.
