I have loved and studied Christian Science for many years, and know that it would be impossible to estimate the benefits which have come to me through the application of its teachings.
My first and most convincing experience of healing came simply through study of a certain passage in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. When I was a small child, a slight curvature of the spine appeared and one of my shoulders was lower than the other. As I grew, the condition became more noticeable, and I was frequently told by teachers and friends to straighten up. By this time, however, I had recognized the condition as supposedly inherited and accepted it as a natural affliction which could not be corrected and would probably become more pronounced as time went on.
The experience referred to took place at a time when I had gained only the slightest knowledge of Christian Science, but it has always seemed significant that it occurred on the morning following my attendance at a Christian Science lecture. As I sat alone studying the Lesson-Sermon as outlined in the Quarterly, I came upon a passage in Science and Health which seemed to apply directly to a case of so-called inherited deformity such as my own. Thereupon I closed my eyes and earnestly tried to understand just what Mrs. Eddy had meant when she wrote those particular lines, and as the spiritual import of the words became clear to my thought there was an involuntary movement of the low shoulder. It seemed to lift and lock. The realization that something had actually happened to the physical condition as a result of my thinking greatly awed me. I arose and examined my shoulders in the mirror, and, still incredulous, measured them against the wall. The low shoulder had risen to perfect alignment with the other. Sixteen years have passed and the condition has never been reversed.
