My gratitude for Christian Science and for our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, is unbounded and is my reason for giving this testimony. Christian Science has met my every need for more than thirteen years, and I know it will continue to do so as long as it is rightly applied. It has healed me of stomach and heart trouble, nervous prostration, severe headaches, pneumonia, burns, a broken bone (which was healed through listening to the reading from the desk at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting), and of many other physical ailments. Fear, depression, and self-will have also been overcome in a great degree.
One demonstration has stood out above many others because it proved the instant availability and power of Truth as taught in Christian Science. About ten years ago, when I was a very young student of Christian Science, I was accidentally shot while hunting. The hunter was about fifty feet from me, and about forty-eight shot penetrated my face, head, neck, chest, and shoulder. The Scripture was truly fulfilled, "Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." Although the shot caused great pain, there was not a second of unconsciousness. My husband came to me and the truth was declared aloud. In a few minutes my thought was uplifted, for I knew I had proved God's allness and power. I knew it with such surety that I told my husband I was ready to be taken home, a distance of about fifteen miles. The twenty-third Psalm comforted and exalted me as we made the trip to the city over very rough roads in a touring car.
Because of his extreme fear, as he was not then a student of Christian Science, my husband took me to a hospital for examination. He asked the surgeon to be considerate of my wishes because I was a Christian Scientist, and said that he brought me only to satisfy himself. All that was done for me was to administer one treatment for tetanus. The surgeon thought it better not to probe for the shot, as they were in too deep and a very serious operation would be necessary. A Christian Science practitioner was called as soon as we reached the city limits, and I was most grateful for her work in overcoming belief in material laws and allaying the fears of my family. A way was provided by the hospital authorities for my husband to remain in my room for two nights and a day because of his great anxiety and fear, which proved their consideration of us both. My recovery was very rapid. Being apparently normal and not having the slightest bit of temperature, I was allowed to leave the hospital in five days; and in a very short time even the discoloration was gone. Today there is scarcely a trace of a scar on face or neck. The shot have never moved, but there has never been the least irritation or pain. I have always made the statement, knowing it to be true, that the truth declared at the time of the experience was the divine law, and that it annulled any and every so-called material law about the case; it had been settled.
