Over twenty-four years ago, when we were struggling in darkness with seemingly endless suffering, one of our neighbors asked us to try Christian Science, of which we had never heard. As a relative who had been paralyzed was in the hospital, not expected to live, and I was under medical treatment for kidney trouble of long standing, also a nervous breakdown, we quickly decided to give it a trial. I took the relative out of the hospital after they informed me that there was no hope for him, and called a Christian Science practitioner to help us. In six weeks we both received our healing. I then cleared out all the medicine in our home and have never had any since.
Christian Science has been our only shield and buckler in our daily life, in health, finances, times of worry and fear, and in many other ways. We have found it provable when rightly applied. Several years ago we needed a home, but I had no steady work and no bank account. We learn in Christian Science that to those who put their trust in Him, God is ever present, so, with a few dollars on hand, I decided to build. I earned a little and built during my spare time, and progress continued. Every time the material on hand was used up, work was provided for me—often when not expected—and the home was finished. Today, eight of us have the pleasure of living in it. I know that without God's help I could never have finished the work, and would never even have started, as I had had no experience or patience with such things before.
Among our many healings we had a beautiful one with the help of a Christian Science practitioner when smallpox was overcome in a few days. I was also healed of the habits of using liquor and of smoking and chewing tobacco, which caused me many years of suffering before I took up the study of Christian Science.
