ALL THINGS NEW

From the March 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Spiritual existence is eternal and must of necessity be continuous, not recurrent. Infinite in its scope, it is always unfolding the beauty and grandeur of God's creation. To understand this in some measure reveals the freshness and loveliness which we associate with all things new and true.

Under the marginal heading "True life eternal," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 246): "Life is eternal. We should find this out, and begin the demonstration thereof. Life and goodness are immortal. Let us then shape our views of existence into loveliness, freshness, and continuity, rather than into age and blight." This is not merely a statement of Truth, but an appeal to humanity to express spiritual activity in its own behalf. How gentle, how persuasive and loving, is this appeal! Only one who was spiritually prepared and guided by wisdom and Love could have been so awake to the needs of others and so well fitted to supply them.

A student of Christian Science finds that a greater sense of happiness has come to him through pondering these words and yielding obedience to their message. A belief was thereby uncovered that human experience consists largely of repetitions of activities which may become irksome or be regarded as routine, and that even the most pleasant experiences when repeated would lose much of the joy and happiness which first accompanied them. This belief, so long as it is entertained, limits joy, spontaneity, and freshness, and leads "into age and blight."
