IMMEDIATE RECUPERATION

From the March 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Wealth of spiritual inspiration unfolds to any devout student of the Bible as he deeply meditates upon the sublime life and splendid achievements of Christ Jesus. During the three years of his public ministry he honored God and blessed his friends and enemies in a manner never equaled by any other individual. Although he was "despised and rejected of men," to use Isaiah's words, he was never revengeful or discouraged; he was misunderstood and maligned, but he never indulged in self-condemnation or took a retrograde step; he was the target for the abuse of the hypocrites whose evil beliefs he uncovered and denounced, yet he never returned evil for evil, and he was successful in escaping without injury when they would have stoned him.

The inhuman desire of his enemies to exterminate both him and the truth he taught was evidenced by unparalleled hatred, scorn, ridicule, and persecution; yet Jesus was not dismayed, and still went about doing good. He healed sin, sorrow, and all manner of disease, and at times not only was it an individual who received healing, but whole multitudes were healed. The raging sea was calmed, the dead were restored to life, the blind received their sight, the multitudes were fed, and thereby Jesus himself expressed true refreshment and strength. He was never spiritually depleted, never lacked the wisdom, ability, health, and strength to begin and to complete each righteous undertaking. We have no record that Jesus ever became ill or incapacitated as a result of his continuous healing work or that he ever felt the need of indulging in a long period of recuperation following his overcoming of evil with good. Because of his spiritual understanding of God and of man's real selfhood, the humble Nazarene was able to draw upon Spirit for immediate recuperation, and so enjoyed continuous reanimation and refreshment.

The source of this recuperation upon which Jesus relied has never been discovered by medical theory, scholastic theology, or human philosophy; but Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has revealed it to all mankind, and for all time to come. In her book entitled "No and Yes" (p. 36), she explains very clearly an important point about the Christ: "The real Christ was unconscious of matter, of sin, disease, and death, and was conscious only of God, of good, of eternal Life, and harmony." And she also shows how Jesus resorted to his higher self, to his unity with God, for continuous rest and recuperation: "The human Jesus had a resort to his higher self and relation to the Father, and there could find rest from unreal trials in the conscious reality and royalty of his being,—holding the mortal as unreal, and the divine as real. It was this retreat from material to spiritual selfhood which recuperated him for triumph over sin, sickness, and death."
