There should be found no more responsible body of men and women in the world today than Christian Scientists, members of The Mother Church. An individual's responsibility may be regarded as his responsibility to God's demands. Yet as true metaphysicians, understanding somewhat the omnipresence of God, Christian Scientists know that man is not somewhere, responding to God somewhere else. In the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, there are many wonderful references to the oneness, the inseparability, of God and man.
"Man," we read on page 470 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "is the expression of God's being." "God" is defined on page 587 as "the great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." Then man is the expression of the all-knowing, all-acting intelligence. So we see that man can do nothing independently of the one divine Mind, or God; he must ever be what he actually is, namely, "the expression of God's being."
First of all, let us consider how to prove what man is, how to demonstrate his true being or nature in connection with the personal problems of everyday experience. Can man, "the expression of God's being," be irritable, fearful, impatient, in a hurry, ungracious, unkind, unloving? Impossible! Man can no more express these qualities than can God—the God in whom we live, move, and have our being. It is scarcely necessary to enlarge upon the innumerable ways in which the healing realization of man's true nature can be demonstrated at home, in the office, on the street—all round the clock.
