UNDERSTANDING AND COMPENSATION

From the August 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Through spiritual understanding gained in Christian Science, thought is unloosed from the bondage of mortal mind to enjoy the freedom and fullness of Life. The Science of Christ reveals the positive and certain remedy for every human discord, be it lack of health, happiness, employment, plenty, or success. The heavenly atmosphere of true intelligence is filled with righteousness, kindness, love, charity, tenderness, and compassion. In a consciousness occupied with these qualities there can dwell nothing to make unhappiness. Disappointments and trials turn us to seek God and to know His law of righteousness, the way leading out of the wilderness of human misery into a field of abundant opportunities, ripe for harvest.

Ignorance of God and man's relationship to Him underlies all human suffering. But the most obstinate illusions of mortal mind, manifested in sickness, sinfulness, failure, ignorance, lack, or poverty, melt away under the penetrating rays of spiritual understanding. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 390), "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."

Shortly after Solomon had inherited the kingdom of David, "in Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee." Referring to his youth and his inexperience, and the new and serious responsibility which confronted him, Solomon petitioned God for "an understanding heart," that he might discern between good and bad. Because of his sincerity and the unselfishness of his request, the Lord bestowed upon him "a wise and an understanding heart," and "both riches, and honour." Early in Solomon's active reign he realized the need for "an understanding heart," righteous thinking. In Proverbs it is written, "Wisdom is the principal thing;" and, "Understanding is a wellspring of life."
