Testimonies of Healing

When I was a small child—supposedly...

From the August 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was a small child—supposedly frail and delicate, surrounded by overanxious care and fears, never out of physicians' hands, and having at that early age experience of operations and nursing homes—Christian Science came to lighten our darkness; and at once, through the spiritualizing of thought in the home, restored me to normal, active, happy childhood. I have since needed no physician but the truth, nor have I consulted any except on two occasions when a medical report was desired from students by school and college authorities. Both of these reports stated that I was "absolutely normal in every respect."

I am indeed grateful for the illumination of Christian Science, since the realization of the true nature of God as Mind and that man is "the full representation of Mind" (Science and Health, p. 591), enabled me to meet all academic requirements with a sense of effortlessness and poise which entirely precluded the sense of fuss, nervous worry, or fearful apprehension which seems inseparable from the human preparation for these experiences.

More recently I had occasion to prove these truths again. As a result of amalgamation of departments, I was called upon to undertake almost twice as much work and responsibility, with no more assistance than before. In a short time I was manifesting an increasing sense of mental strain, and finally, acute insomnia. At this point I saw clearly that this was the penalty of losing sight of the fact that I was "but the humble servant of the restful Mind" (Science and Health, p. 119). The realization of the truth restored my thought to calmness and assurance, and instantaneously healed me of the insomnia. My work was not lessened, but I brought to it once more the serenity of knowing that man reflects divine Mind without effort of human will. Much joy is now arising from this formerly burdensome work.
